French is taught in KS2 either as a distinct lesson or through every day routines like the register, lining up and weather chart.

The aims of learning French at Stewart Headlam are to foster an interest in learning another language and to make it fun, to make children aware that language has structure and that the structure differs from one language to another and finally to lay the foundations for future study.

The children are taught to:

  • Listen to and orally rehearse vocabulary, phrases, rhymes and poems.
  • Ask and answer questions
  • Memorise words
  • Understand basic grammar
  • Use French/English dictionaries
  • Look at life in another culture
